How to Create a Hotel Bed at Home

A lot of us enjoy the hotel bed so much that we would like to re-create that particular bed in our own homes. I am going to explain how you can create a luxury feeling in your own bed so that you can enjoy your very own staycation bliss and get that sleep you received while on vacation.

Many hotels have many layers stacked on their beds like a “bed sandwich” to be able to control loft, comfort, and temperature. This is important because it gives you the support that most people need but allows for comfort and softness that down brings to bedding while maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Most hotel beds start with a featherbed. Featherbeds are great for adding an extra 3-6 inches of soft layer and puff to most beds. Depending on the amount of loft you would like the featherbed can go under a deep fitted sheet or on top of the fitted sheet under the top sheet.

Next is the top sheet, which is then followed by a down comforter.  The down comforter can come in many weights, depending on the season, and can allow loft. Add another top sheet or duvet cover on top of the comforter as well.

This allows most people to control the temperature of their bodies throughout the night because you get to choose how many layers you want to fall asleep under. Now add a coverlet for some color and luxury and you are almost done!

                Next, comes one of the most important parts to sleep and luxury! The Pillows! The pillows on hotels “stand proud” and are often piled on to allow for a “buffet” of pillow selections. Most hotels offer a selection of down and feathers or polyester pillows to accommodate people with allergies. The best part of making your own hotel bed is that you can choose pillows that accommodate your needs. Most hotel beds have four pillows with a few throw pillows to accent the bedding.

Hotel pillow disclaimer: It is important to keep in mind that most pillows ordered come brand new and often do not have the same feeling as the pillows in hotels. This is due to a daily fluffing and use of the pillows on constant bases. Most pillows are worn and broken in which is what cause them to have a different feeling. Pacific Pillows at the Yahoo! Small Business Summit

 

Last week I (Chelsea Duckham, Director of Marketing) had the privilege of attending the Yahoo! Small Business Merchant Summit. The summit was a gathering of all merchants that run their online stores on the Yahoo! Small Business platform and it took place in San Jose, Ca. The summit had over 200 merchants attend and the sessions and panels consisted of over 35 speakers.  It was the perfect opportunity to network with other online merchants and learn more about their experiences as online retailers. I also spent some time with our current partners that help us run our website. The main takeaway from the summit was that we need to establish ourselves further as the bedding experts. We have such an amazing staff here at Pacific Pillows and the largest selection of pillows available anywhere, but we need to market our bedding expertise more on the website. I also learned about new tools to help visitors select the perfect product for them. We will be adding new additions to PacificPillows.com that will help with visitor usability and will help customers choose the perfect bedding for them from our wide inventory selection.

How to Stay Healthy on Vacation

It’s that time of year when most are planning their vacation which means a time to indulge in drinks and delicious food that may or may not be so healthy. It is also a time to get the most out of your vacation which means a lack in sleep as well. Here are a few ways to make your vacation as awesome as possible without damaging your health too much. It is also important not to break too many habits away from home.

Sleep is probably the biggest factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle while on vacation. Most people tend to make sleep the least of their priorities since they want to get the most time and fun out of their vacation. What you don’t know is that this can impact your sleeping habits back at home once your no longer on vacation. Ultimately, this can lead to mood swings, poor health, and even memory loss.  Sleep is the most important factor in maintaining sound mind and sound body and has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease over a long period of time.  Try to maintain the sleeping patterns used while at home.

While on vacation it’s important to include a “sleep vacation” as well. This means listening to your body when you start to get tired and choosing that time as a consistent bed time. Do not use an alarm clock to wake up. Vacations are a great way to establish a pattern of sleeping that you can even take home if your personal life is hectic. The benefits of sleep vacation allow you to find out how much sleep you really need, establish a sleep pattern, and pay back sleep debt. You will also start to feel sharper, happier, and healthier. The next step is to make sure you continue to this patter.

Other factors that can lead to unhealthy sleep while on vacation are the consumption of alcoholic beverages and unhealthy foods. Sure it ok to splurge a little while on vacation but it’s important to keep in mind that alcohol inhibits your body from getting actual REM sleep. And junk food can sometimes make you feel full and gross which in turn can keep you up at night. Remember, that you can always ask for custom foods and drink in moderation.

Vacations are a great time to let loose, party, meet new people, enjoy company, and just have a great time. It is also a time to relax, catch up on some zzz’s and enjoy life without feeling worked. Take the opportunity and allow your body to rejuvenate by allowing it the proper sleep it needs. You will wake feeling happier, healthier, and you will enjoy your vacation that much more.
